Egmont - The Royal Institute for International Relations ( Dutch : Egmont - Het Koninklijk Instituut voor Internationale Betrekkingen ), also known as the Egmont Institute, is an independent, non-profit think tank in Brussels .

The institute carries out interdisciplinary research in the field of international relations . Main tasks are the organization of events, research and the training of civil servants. The institute is affiliated to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from which it is largely financed. The Egmont Institute also receives funds from European institutions, membership fees and private participants.

history

The Royal Institute for International Relations (the institute's original name) was founded in 1947 by Belgian politicians. Among them were political leaders such as Paul van Zeeland , former Prime Minister, Charles De Visscher , Member of the International Court of Justice, Fernand Dehousse , Member of the Belgian Delegation to San Francisco and Henri Rolin , Senator and Barrister. On its 60th anniversary, the institute was renamed "Egmont - Royal Institute for International Relations". The new name refers to the Palais d'Egmont , where most of the Institute's activities take place.

structure

The Egmont Institute is run by the board of directors. The current President is Viscount Etienne Davignon , former Vice-President of the European Commission. The Vice-President of the Egmont Institute is Dirk eighth, permanent secretary of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other members of the board of directors are prominent Belgian politicians, distinguished diplomats, academics and civil servants. The general director is currently the former ambassador Marc Otte .

research

The main activity is research in the field of political science. The research takes place within the framework of three research programs

  • European Affairs - deals with European integration
  • Europe in the World - deals with Europe's role in international relations
  • Africa - focused on Sub-Saharan and Central Africa

further education

Continuing education courses take place on topics such as European integration, civil crisis management, and security and diplomacy. These courses are often organized by third parties such as the Belgian Federal Public Service, the European Institutions and Wallonie International Brussels .

Events

The Egmont Institute organizes various events, most of which take place in Brussels. According to the institute, the aim of the events is to stimulate and deepen dialogues between legislators, science and the public. The Egmont Institute also serves as a forum for governments, representatives, foreign ministers and international organizations.

Partnerships

The Egmont Institute participates in various projects and networks in collaboration with other research institutes. It is the leading partner for the 'European Observatory' and 'l'Observatoire de l'Afrique'.

  • the European Policy Institutes Network (EPIN)

  • Expertise for Central Africa (E-CA)

The institute works regularly with the Royal Belgian Defense Institute. In 2012 the Egmont Institute awarded the doctoral prize for international security and international relations.

Effects

The Egmont Institute appears in several categories in the Pennsylvania University's 2013 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. The Egmont Institute ranks 83rd in the top non-American think tanks worldwide, 30th among think tanks in Western Europe and 30th in the top foreign policy and international relations.
