The finger millet ( Digitaria ischaemum ), also called bald finger millet , is a plant species within the genus of the finger millet ( Digitaria ) and thus also of the sweet grass family (Poaceae).

description

Spikelets of Digitaria ischaemum

The plant is annual, tufted and mostly prostrate. Their stalks become 10-30- (59) centimeters long. The stalk has only 4-6 knots. The leaf sheaths are somewhat compressed, the lower ones sometimes densely covered in their entire length with hairs at most one millimeter long. The upper leaf sheaths are bare. The ligula is an evenly wide, membranous border. The leaf blades are 2–10 centimeters long and 2–6 millimeters wide. You are bald on both sides.

The flower panicle consists of 2–6 clusters arranged in a whorl at the end of the stem or at a distance of 5–10 millimeters above each other. The spikelets are in the middle of the cluster in threes, otherwise in twos. The spikelets are 2–2.5 millimeters long, ovate. The lower glume is absent or has only a short border. The upper glume is 3–5 nervous as long as the spikelet and between the nerves are densely covered with hook-shaped hairs. The lemma of the lower, sterile spikelet is 5-7-nerved and as long as the spikelet. It is long-egg-shaped and somewhat pointed. The lemma of the upper hermaphrodite spikelet is slightly shorter than the spikelet, acuminate, shiny and glabrous. The anthers are 0.6-0.8 millimeters long.

The flowering period is July to October.

The chromosome number is 2n = 36.

Occurrence

The distribution area originally stretches from southeastern Central Europe and Southern Europe to Japan. In America and in many other countries the species is a neophyte.

It thrives in Central Europe on fresh, nutrient-rich, mostly low-lime, moderately acidic, loamy-clay sandy soils in a humid climate. It is a character species of the Digitarietum ischaemi from the sub-association Digitario-Setarienion, but also occurs in societies of the associations Polygonion avicularis or Nanocyperion.

Taxonomy
