Dilijan ( Armenian Դիլիջան , also Dilijan , Delijan and Delidschan ) is a city in the northern Armenian province of Tavush , which was developed into one of the leading health resorts in the country during the Soviet period .

location

The city extends over 20 km on the banks of the Aghstafa ( Russian Akstafa , on the lower reaches of Azerbaijan Ağstafacay ) and is located at an altitude of 1500  m surrounded by mountains in the Dilijan National Park founded in 2002 . In Dilijan also lead Golowinka and Dilidschanka in Aghstew. The mountainous area covers 34,000 hectares of forest. Because of its idyllic location, locals call it the “Little Switzerland” of Armenia. Dilijan is rich in mineral springs, and the “Dilijan” mineral water is said to have beneficial effects.

history

In the vicinity of Dilijan, a late Bronze Age burial ground from around 1300 BC was discovered during road construction work in 1859 . Discovered. The site is known as "Redkin Camp" after the lead engineer behind the construction work, Redkin. Many grave chambers were still untouched and had rich grave goods. The dead were often buried in a crouching position on one side with the face facing west.

The region around Dilijan was previously called Hovk and was popular with local princes, including the Arsacids , as a hunting ground. In 1666 the French traveler Jean Chardin first mentioned the place Dilijan. Under Russian rule, the population began to grow in the 19th century and the first schools and a public library were founded in 1908.

Dilijan was the vacation spot of the Armenian kings in the Middle Ages. During the Soviet era, party and political bosses came here from Moscow for a cure. Even today, many Armenian artists and filmmakers call the city their home.

Dilijan was granted city rights in 1951 and had 15,601 inhabitants in 2009, about a third less than in 1989. Dilijan is one of the most important places for relaxation and tourism in Armenia. Hiking and cycling tours are particularly popular, especially in the nature reserve.

In the center of the village, along Sharambejan Street, is the old town, which was restored with funds from the Tufenkian Foundation . A museum and a gallery can be found here. In the houses there, some of the historical interior furnishings from the beginning of the 20th century have been preserved.

One of the main attractions is the Haghartsin Monastery . It consists of three churches and a refectory , which were built between the 10th and 14th centuries. Several khachkars can be visited in the monastery and in the vicinity . Between 2008 and 2013, the monastery was renovated with Arab donations. Another medieval monastery, Goshavank , is located in the village of Gosha, a few kilometers away.

Others

Impulse Dilijan football club played in the first Armenian football league in 1993.
