Dillinger Hammer

The ceremonial hammer with which Pope Julius III is called the Dillinger Hammer . struck at the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome to usher in the Holy Year celebrated in 1550 . Julius gave the precious hammer to the cardinal and Augsburg prince-bishop Otto Truchsess von Waldburg , who gave it to the university he founded in Dillingen an der Donau in today's Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . The hammer made in 1549/50 is very well preserved and is kept in the Bavarian National Museum in Munich .

The tradition of opening the Holy Year with three hammer blows on the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome goes back to Pope Alexander VI. back. He used a golden hammer for the first time at Christmas 1499 and thus ushered in the Holy Year, which was celebrated in 1500. For the opening of the Holy Year of 1550, Pope Julius III. a silver pageant hammer, which came into the possession of the former University of Dillingen as a gift to Cardinal Otto von Waldburg. In addition to the three pine cones and the three lions that were part of the cardinal's family coat of arms, the Dillinger Hammer became part of the coat of arms of the Dillinger University .

The head of the hammer is richly decorated with ornaments. A winged putti head is emblazoned at the transition between head and handle . The stem is provided with the papal coat of arms. Below, in a frame, the inscription is engraved: IULIUS III PONT MAX IOBILAEUM VIII CONDIDIT FELICITER (Julius III happily opened the eighth year of jubilee).
