Dimitri Basov

Dimitri N. Basov (* 1963 ) is an American physicist and professor of physics at Columbia University in New York City .

Life

Dimitri Basov was born in Russia as the son of Nikolai Basov . There he did his Ph.D. at the Lebedev Institute . Between 1992 and 1996 he was a postdoctoral fellow at McMaster University in Canada. In 1996 he became an Assistant Physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory . Between 1997 and 2001 he was an Associate Professor at the University of California at San Diego ; In 2001 he became Professor of Physics there. Since 2016 he has been the Higgins Professor of Physics at Columbia University.

Research and Pricing

Dimitri Basov's research focuses on the physics of quantum materials, on plasmonic and polaritonic phenomena in graphene and other two-dimensional Van der Waals materials, on unconventional superconductivity , on topological insulators and on electromagnetic metamaterials .

For his research he was elected an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow in 1997 and a Cottrell Fellow in 1998. In the same year he received the NSF Career Award. In 2004 he was awarded the Ludwig Genzel Prize, in 2005 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society , in 2009 he received the Humboldt Research Award and in 2012 the Frank Isakson Prize for Optical Effects in Solids. In 2014 he became Gordon and Betty Moore Investigator in Quantum Materials and in 2018 he received the Kenneth J Button Award 2019. In 2020 Basov was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
