Ding Dong, Ding Dong is a New Year's song by the British musician and ex- Beatle George Harrison from 1974.

background

In Harrison's own words, he found the words of the song on a wall of his Friar Park estate. They are said to come from the poem Ring, Wild Bells by Lord Alfred Tennyson : “Ring out the old, ring in the new; ring out the false, ring in the true. " ('Ring out the old, ring in the new; ring out the wrong, ring in the true.') He found the words in the middle section on the wall of his garden house: “Yesterday today was tomorrow and tomorrow today will be yesterday” ( 'Yesterday was' today '' tomorrow ', and tomorrow' today 'will be' yesterday ''), a saying that recalls the statement in Harrison's 1970 song All Things Must Pass .

composition

The piece is notated in G major , E major and B major ; it is in four-four time and lasts 3:40 minutes or 3:36 minutes as the single version and 3:38 minutes in the LP version. The melody is reminiscent of the Westminster chime of Big Ben .

To market the song, a video clip was produced in which George Harrison appears in a leather jacket like he did in Hamburg , in a collarless Beatles suit, in a Sgt.Pepper costume and as a pirate. In this video he draws a pirate flag and hoists a flag with the sacred Om syllable. These images allow the words of the song "old" to be interpreted as the Beatles' time, "new" as the time after the Beatles, "false" as robbery and "true" as the Hindu religion. The video is included on the DVD of The Apple Years 1968–75 box released in 2014 .
