Diogo Kopke

Diogo Kopke , actually Diogo Köpke , (* 1808 in Porto , Portugal ; † February 25, 1844 ibid) was a Portuguese publicist , lecturer , journalist and military of German descent. He achieved world literary importance through the publication of the only travel report by an eyewitness of Vasco da Gama's first trip to India .

Life

As far as life and work can be reconstructed, Kopke was born as a descendant of Germans who moved to the trading city of Porto. First he was active in the military and made it up to the rank of captain of the artillery .

He was also active as a journalist and wrote for various magazines, such as Diario do Governo , Gazeta Medica do Porto , and Museu Portuense .

As a lecturer in mathematics, he worked in Porto at the Academica Politecnica do Porto , which also allowed him to work part-time as an editor of foreign texts. He published a text by the former Viceroy of India , Dom João de Castro and the mathematician and poet José Anastácio da Cunha . His publication of the text of a text attributed to Alvaro Velho about the journey by Vasco da Gama, the only surviving text on this journey, of world literary importance, is of great importance. He often wrote long forewords or afterwords or commented on versions.

He died on February 25, 1844 in his hometown of Porto. Kopke belonged to the Kopke port wine dynasty .
