João de Castro

João de Castro (born February 7, 1500 in Lisbon , † June 6, 1548 in Goa ) was a Portuguese general and navigator .

Castro fought against the Moors in his early youth and accompanied Charles V to Tunis . In 1540 he took part in the Portuguese expedition to the Red Sea and in 1545 was appointed governor of the Estado da Índia . Here he made a name for himself in particular by defending Diu against the Muslims . In 1548 he was raised by the governor to the fourth viceroy of Portuguese India .

His most interesting letters from the East Indies to the King of Portugal are kept in the library at Lisbon.

João de Castro died in Goa on June 6, 1548.

The Dom-João-de-Castro-Bank , a shoal between the Azores islands of São Miguel and Terceira, was named after him . He is also the namesake for Mount Castro in the Antarctic.
