Dipogon is a species of wasps (Pompilidae). Since the sub-genus Deuteragenia and other sub-genera were hived offin 2012, the genus only includes species from the New World .

features

The species of the genus Dipogon are small to medium-sized, black wasps. The head and thorax are very punctiform. The frontal plate ( clypeus ) is short and wide, more or less convex and the apical edge is truncated, concave or convex. The labrum is partially or completely covered by the front plate. The mandibles are strong and have two additional teeth. In females, the cardo of the maxilla has long, forward-facing bristles ("beard"). The scutellum and the metanotum are almost flat, the metapostnotum is much shorter than the metanotum. The propodeum is increasingly curved backwards. The base of the first tergum on the metasoma is slightly stalked. In females, the second sternum has a transverse groove, the sixth sternum is more or less laterally flattened and has a median groove, the sixth tergum is conical with long, stiff bristles at the tip. In the males, the visible part of the subgenital plate is longitudinally folded or grooved. The forewings have two brown bands, the wing mark ( pterostigma ) is medium to very large. The legs are weakly thorn. The thighs ( femora ) of the middle and rear legs have a basal ring ( trochantellus ). The rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are smooth.

distribution

The species of the wasp genus Dipogon are common in North , Central and South America . Their distribution area extends from northern Argentina to southern Canada .

Way of life

The wasps mainly colonize forests. The females lay their nests in existing cavities in dead wood, insect-feeding tunnels, walls and the like. They consist of several cells in a row. The cell partition walls and the nest closure are made of different materials that are transported with the "beard". The brood is supplied with spiders from the families Agelenidae , Amaurobiidae , Araneidae , Clubionidae , Dysderidae , Gnaphosidae , Oxyopidae , Salticidae , Segestriidae and Thomisidae .

species

After the subgenera Deuteragenia , Myrmecodipogon , Nipponodipogon , Stigmatodipogon and Winnemanella , the genus Dipogon includes the following species:
