Dirk-Ulrich Mende (born December 26, 1957 in Münster ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was Lord Mayor of the City of Celle from 2009 to 2017 .

Life

Mende studied law in Marburg and Göttingen and passed his state examination in 1987. He then worked as an employee of the regional president in Kassel , the former Federal Office for the Recognition of Refugees (now Federal Office for Migration ), the State Welfare Association of Hessen in Kassel, the State Insurance Institute Schleswig-Holstein and the Lower Saxony Ministry for Social Affairs, Women, Family and Health . From 1999 to 2003 Mende was managing director of the SPD parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament . From 2003 to 2008 Mende was head of department in the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Integration. He initially worked for five years in the area of ​​administrative modernization and then in the area of ​​integration.

Mende is married and has three children. In his free time he likes to go jogging and also takes part in long-distance runs.

Political career

Even as a teenager, Mende was involved in the Rotenburg / Fulda youth center movement, was Juso chairman in Bebra and co-founder of the youth welfare organization in North Hesse. He has been a member of the SPD since 1975 and a member of the Workers' Welfare Association since 1972 . In the youth organization he worked for many years on a wide variety of levels up to the deputy federal and state chairman in Hesse. In Kassel he supported the OV Wilhelmshöhe of the SPD for many years without taking over any functions. In 2006, after the successful local election, Mende was elected to the magistrate of the city of Kassel, to which he was a member until his election as mayor in Celle.

On February 22nd, 2009, after an election campaign that lasted only a few weeks, Mende was elected the city's first social democratic mayor since the Second World War . Surprisingly, despite one applicant and a total of three applicants, he was elected with 50.8% of the votes in the first ballot. He won with a clear lead over his competitor, the favored Susanne Schmitt ( CDU ).

Mende has been a member of the state board of the SPD's local political working group, the SGK Lower Saxony , since 2011 . He has also been a member of the state executive committee of the SPD Lower Saxony since 2012 .

On September 25, 2016 he was narrowly defeated in the runoff election for mayor to Jörg Nigge (CDU). On February 24, 2017, he therefore resigned as Lord Mayor of the city of Celle.

In April 2018 it was announced that Dirk-Ulrich Mende would succeed Jan Arning as managing director of the Lower Saxony City Council.
