Dirk Anton George Bruggeman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dirk Anton George Bruggeman (born January 13, 1888 in Heerenveen , Friesland province , Netherlands ; † May 26, 1945 in Wickrathberg , Mönchengladbach , Germany) was a Dutch physicist.

Life

Dirk Anton George Bruggeman was born to Hendrik Bruggeman and Catharina Johanna Maria Vastenou. In 1930 he received his doctorate from the University of Utrecht with his thesis on elastic constants of crystal aggregates . His doctoral supervisor was Hendrik Anthony Kramers . He died in 1945 in the Wickrathberg POW camp .

Scientific importance

Dirk Anton George Bruggeman developed new formulas to calculate the dielectric , magnetic and optical properties of heterogeneous materials. These formulas, the so-called Bruggeman model, are used today (2014) in the effective medium theory (EMT). Bruggeman's formulas are used wherever attempts are made to improve the desired properties by combining different substances. A current example is the production of solar modules with the highest possible efficiency and low reflection.

Example of the Bruggeman model

In the case of spherical inclusions of n different materials with the volume parts and the permittivities and the effective permittivity , the Bruggeman formula reads:
