Dirleton is a town in the Scottish council area of East Lothian . It is located in the north of the region about three kilometers southwest of North Berwick and ten kilometers north of Haddington .
history
In the early 12th century, the barony of Dirleton, which stretched to the Firth of Forth , came into the possession of William de Vaux . The de Vaux family had a wooden fortress built on the site. Probably in the 13th century this was replaced by the nucleus of today's Dirleton Castle . In 1663 the property came into the possession of John Nisbet, Lord Dirleton . This was the same year the nearby mansion Archerfield House built for himself and Dirleton Castle was abandoned. Today the ruin belongs to the National Trust for Scotland .
The current parish church of Dirleton was built in 1612. Built before Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh , it is one of the earliest post-Reformation church buildings in Scotland.

traffic
The A198 runs directly south of Dirleton and connects the village to the trunk road network. In the past, Dirleton had its own train station along the branch line to North Berwick, which branches off from what is now the East Coast Main Line . However, the route has been abandoned in the meantime. With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport some 35 km south-west.
Two weeks in September
The 1967 British-French film (Two Weeks September) (À cœur joie) was partially shot in the region. The film starred Brigitte Bardot and Laurent Terzieff and was directed by Serge Bourguignon . Scenes for the film were filmed on location at Dirleton Castle and on Gullane Beach in September 1966. The main characters stayed at the Open Arms Hotel in Dirleton.
