The products of the manufactory in the Palatinate municipality of Dirmstein are referred to as Dirmsteiner faience , in which between 1778 and 1788 mainly utility ceramics and, to a lesser extent, ceramics for representational purposes were produced from faience . Dirmstein belonged to the then Hochstift Worms (now Rhineland-Palatinate ).

history

The ceramic factory was established in 1778 in the center of the Dirmsteiner Oberdorf; At that time the place was the summer residence of the Worms Bishop and Mainz Elector Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal , who was the initiator of the complex. The white earth was delivered from what is now the “ Erdekaut” near Hettenleidelheim , the monastery’s own open-cast mine in the Palatinate Forest . The imposing Reigerspergischer Hof building from 1592, which stood on the corner of Marktstrasse and Metzgergasse on the north side of Schlossplatz , served as the factory in Dirmstein . In 1689 it was one of the few houses that survived the village being burned down by the French in the War of the Palatinate Succession . Around 1780, the master craftsman and lathe operator Danton was the artistic director of the Dirmstein manufactory.

As early as 1779 there was an intrigue against the manufacture director and ceramics expert Carl Vogelmann, when the mayor Michael Graeff circulated false accusations against him. Vogelmann was expropriated and chased out of the village with his wife and seven children. The successor as director was the mayor. However, this proved to be unsuitable for running the business and was discontinued in 1782 after three years of mismanagement.

Graeff's successors also failed to lead the company to economic success. In addition, the numerous border and protective tariffs in the region caused sales difficulties for the finished products. Because the china workers feared impoverishment, there were repeated work stoppages . The manufacture was given up in 1788.

In the 1960s, under Mayor Erich Otto, the former manufacturing system was broken off. Until then it was the oldest building in town.

production

The manufactory produced utility ceramics, for example room stoves for the episcopal residences. In addition, dishes such as table and tea services were produced. In addition, small statues of Rousseau , Voltaire and Shakespeare were made.

Dirmsteiner faience is rare because of its short production time; the few surviving copies are coveted by collectors.
