The family Disc- (Discoglossidae) belongs to the order Anura (Anura). Their distribution ranges from north-west Africa across Europe to the Middle East. Several anatomical features separate them from other families, such as the toads (Bufonidae). As a primeval ("lower") frog ( Archaeobatrachia ) they still have real ribs. Your tongue is round, thick and mostly fused to the floor of the mouth. It can therefore not, as with "higher" frogs ( Neobatrachia ), be flicked out to catch prey. The amplexus at the mating season occurs in the lumbar region.
Systematics

Today, the species is still only discoglossus ( Discoglossus ) belongs to this family. Alternatively, there is the view that Discoglossidae just a synonym of Alytidae was, but in addition there in the case Discoglossus the midwife toads ( Alytes ) are grouped.
