The Corsican disc whip ( Discoglossus montalentii ) is a species of frog endemic to Corsica from the genus of the common disc whip ( Discoglossus ) in the family of disc whiskeys (Discoglossidae). The art epithet honors the Italian biologist and geneticist Giuseppe Montalenti (1904–1990).

features

Larva during metamorphosis with already clearly developed rows of warts (arrows)

The largest known head-torso length is 62.5 millimeters for males and 54.2 millimeters for females. The species is strongly built and has a broad head. This measures about a third of the length of the head and torso. The muzzle is blunt, the tip of the upper and lower jaw are almost at the same level. The fourth finger is wider at the tip than at the base. So far, two different color variants are known. One is monochrome dark brown, dark gray, reddish or reddish brown, the other is spotted with dark brown. The edge of the spots is not light. There is no longitudinal banding. Often there is a light spot on the back. The ventral side is yellowish white.

Occurrence

Distribution map
Habitat: stream valley north of Monte Cinto at about 1100  m

As a habitat, the Corsican disc beak colonizes mainly flowing waters in wooded areas. So far, habitats have been found at altitudes of 300 ( Sartène ) to 1900  m (northwest of Monte Cinto ). On the island, the species is widespread in the central collin-montane part from the upper reaches of the Fango via Ponte-Leccia to Cervione as the “northern border” and in the south to the mountains between Sotta and Levie . Since the Corsican disc beater can sometimes occur syntopically with the Sardinian disc beater and there is a risk of confusion between the two species, finds clearly outside this “core area” must be viewed critically. There are at least two of these finds on the west coast of Cap Corse , more to the west of Calvi and also from the coastal strip between Bonifacio and the town of Tizzano, which is around 30 km northwest, and finally on the small island group Îles Lavezzi , which do not seem to fit into the habitat pattern . The eastern coastal plain is free of finds , only north of Solenzara Airport and near Fautea there are finds that suggest incorrect determinations, as they also deviate from the settlement pattern.

Hazard and protection

The species is classified in the IUCN Red List as a type of warning list ("Near Threatened") due to its small distribution area.

The Corsican disc lobster is listed by the European Union in Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive and is therefore a species of community interest to be strictly protected, for whose preservation special protected areas must be designated by the member states.
