Disocactus aurantiacus is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet aurantiacus means 'orange'.

description

Disocactus aurantiacus has drooping, branching from the base up to 3 meters and longer shoots , which are 2 to 5 angular to flattened and 1 meter long have toothed or lobed edges. They are 1 to 2 inches thick and 1.5 to 3 inches wide. Thorns are completely absent or there are up to 30 hairy, cream-colored and up to 1.5 centimeters long.

The flowers appear individually in the upper half of the shoots. They are funnel-shaped, curved upwards, about 12.5 to 15.5 inches long, and are light to medium orange in color with a slight magenta tinge. The ellipsoidal, yellowish-green fruits with a pink hint are up to 7 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Disocactus aurantiacus is distributed in the Mexican state of Chiapas , in Honduras in the Francisco Morazán department and in Nicaragua in the Jinotega administrative district in cloud forests at altitudes between 1500 and 1850 meters.

The first description as Heliocereus aurantiacus was in 1974 by Myron William Kimnach . Wilhelm Barthlott placed the species in 1991 in the genus Disocactus .

Synonyms are the following described species and varieties: Heliocereus aurantiacus Kimnach (1974), Heliocereus aurantiacus var. Blomianus Kimnach (1990), Disocactus aurantiacus var. Blomianus (Kimnach) E. Meier (1996) and Disocactus speciosus subsp. blomianus (Kimnach) Ralf Bauer (2003).
