Disocactus kimnachii is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the American botanist Myron William Kimnach (* 1922).

description

Disocactus kimnachii initially grows upright, later spreads out and finally pendulous. The shoots branch out from the base. They are round at the base, initially concave triangular, finally flat and green with a protruding central rib up to 60 centimeters long and 2 to 4 centimeters wide. The edges are serrated. The 1 to 4  thorns are 1 to 4 millimeters long.

The flowers arise in the upper half of the shoots. They are funnel-shaped and wide-opening, distinctly pinkish-red and are up to 16 centimeters long. They have a tube three to four inches long. The top-shaped, partly spherical reddish to amber colored fruits are 2 to 3 centimeters long.

Distribution and systematics

Disocactus kimnachii is widespread in Costa Rica in the province of San José .

It was first described in 1987 by Gordon Douglas Rowley .

The following species has been described as a synonym : Nopalxochia horichii Kimnach (1984).

Because of Disocactus horichii Kimnach , Nopalxochia horichii needed a new name when it was transferred to Disocactus . According to Bauer, this taxon could be a hybrid between Epiphyllum crenatum var. Kimnachii and a species of Disocactus UG Ackermannia .
