Djabe is a Hungarian jazz and world music group that was founded in 1996.

history

The group emerged, initially as a side project, from the group Novus Jam , in which some of the musicians had been working together since 1994. The repertoire of the first album dates back to 1995, when two members of Novus Jam , Attila Égerházi and András Sipos (1954–2007), decided to change the musical structure. The name Djabe proposed by Sipos is inspired by the Akan word djabe , which means freedom . This freedom is primarily understood as a free mixture of musical styles and arrangements.

The group composes their own works in which the jazz style is mixed with elements of Hungarian and African music. Djabe has performed at various festivals around the world and also works with other musicians, including Steve Hackett and Ben Castle . The group's recordings appear on Gramy Records .
