The Freundsamer Moos (also: Freundsamer Moor , Dobramoor , Jakobimoor ) is a moor area in the Wimitzer Mountains in Carinthia , in the area of the municipalities of Sankt Urban and Liebenfels .

location

The valley basin of the Freundsamer Moos lies at a height of just over 900 meters. It is framed by the Ilmitzer Wald in the north, Paulsberg and Hocheck (both known for the Simonhöhe ski area ) in the west and by the Gößberg in the south. The drainage takes place to the east through the Gradenegger Bach .

Type

Freundsamer Moos is an acid oligotrophic rain bog .

Use and ownership

The artificial dam by which the Freundsamer Pond was dammed was destroyed by a storm in the second half of the 19th century; the tidal wave devastated the Feistritzbachtal . Large parts of the formerly extensive moor have been pitted and are used as meadows and pastures. There are only about 3 hectares of real raised bog. 33 hectares of the Freundsamer Moos have been bought by the Austrian Nature Conservation Union and since then have been spared extensive animal husbandry so that they can relax.

Ornithological importance

In the 1990s, the following protected bird species were found to breed in the moor and the forested mountains to the south: black stork (at that time the only occurrence in Carinthia), honey buzzard, peregrine falcon, capercaillie, corncrake, pygmy owl, black woodpecker, red-backed killer. Booted eagles and woodcock were observed as migrants or guests.

Cold pole

As part of a cold pole study, a meteorological station was temporarily operated on Dobramoor in 2006 in order to record temperature minima for extreme valley and basin locations. Temperatures down to −30.0 ° C were measured.
