Dog Island is an uninhabited island in the Caribbean Sea belonging to the British Overseas Territory Anguilla of the United Kingdom .
geography
With an area of 207 hectares , Dog Island is the third largest island in Anguilla. It is located about 13 km northwest of the main island of Anguilla .
Off the west, north and northeast coasts of Dog Island are three small sand islands : West Cay , Mid Cay and East Cay .
Dog Island is low and rocky, with a maximum height of 29 meters with three small bays on the north and west coasts (Savannah Bay to the northeast, Spring Bay to the northwest, and Bailey's Cove to the west). The coast is characterized by low cliffs that alternate with sandy beaches. There are large ponds on two beaches. The Prickly Pear Cays are five kilometers east of Dog Island .
Flora and fauna
The central part of the island is covered with thorny scrub and prickly pear cactus . The island and its bays have been designated as an important bird sanctuary by BirdLife International, as a large number of nesting seabirds live here, mainly sooty terns with over 100,000 registered pairs. Other seabirds that breed in smaller numbers, are Red-billed tropic birds , frigate , mask and brown booby , black-headed gulls , Zügelseeschwalben and brown Noddis . The reptiles found on the island include the Anguilla Bank Ameive , the Anguilla Bank Anole (a Dactyloa species), the small dwarf gecko , the smallest gecko on the island and a Mabuye species belonging to the skink family . There are also wild goats .
