The Dojran ( Macedonian Дојранско Езеро Dojransko Ezero ; Greek Λίμνη Δοϊράνη Límni Doïráni ) is to Ohrid and Prespa , the smallest of the three major lakes in the Balkan region Macedonia .

geography

The Dojran Lake is located in the southeast of North Macedonia on the border with Greece , which runs through the lake. Of its area of 43.1 km², North Macedonia accounts for 27.3 km² and Greece for 15.8 km². It lies at a height of 147 m above sea level and is on average 10 m deep.

In 2002, a project to build an aqueduct was started in Macedonia , which is supposed to supply the lake with water from the surrounding mountains, the water level of which has fallen by almost five meters over the past 20 years mainly due to excessive water abstraction for agriculture. In return, Greece has committed itself to taking measures to protect the lake, which is still considered to be of great ecological value.

history

During the First World War , the sea was the frontline area on the Salonika Front between the troops of Germany , Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria on the side of the Central Powers and the troops of the Entente powers France , Great Britain and later Greece. The most important of the fighting was the 3rd Dojran Battle on September 18 and 19, 1918, in which Greek and British troops broke through the heavily fortified front of the Bulgarians on the eastern edge of the lake. A Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery and memorial from 1926 commemorate the war dead from Great Britain and Greece.
