Dolar Popat, Baron Popat (born June 14, 1953 in Busolwe , Uganda ) is a British businessman and politician with Indian roots. In July 2010 he was appointed as Life Peer member of the British House of Lords and was the first Gujarati , the conservatives represented in the House of Lords. He emigrated to Great Britain in 1971 while the Asians were being expelled from Uganda. He is President of the Conservatives in the Harrow East constituency and is a member and advisor to various Asian groups within the Conservatives.

Life

Popat was born in Busolwe and grew up in Tororo / Uganda . He has seven siblings. The family's roots lie in the Indian state of Gujarat , where his father Shree Amarshibhai Haridas Popat and his mother Parvatiben Amarshibhai Popat were born. Popat's father left India in 1938 to immigrate to Uganda.

Popat moved to the UK in 1971 , a year before many Indians were expelled from Uganda. He financed his education at Kilburn Polytechnic by doing odd jobs as a dishwasher, waiter and cook at Wimpey on Kilburn High Street. In 1977 he qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

After completing his studies, Popat trained as a tax consultant and auditor, and has worked in this profession since the 1970s, specializing in advising commercial companies.

In the late 1980s he also took on mandates in the health care sector and since the 1990s in the hotel industry, securing a major concession for Holiday Inn and Express by Holiday Inn in the United Kingdom.

Popat has been actively associated with the Conservative Party since the 1980s by serving two Conservative Prime Ministers, Margaret Thatcher and John Major . During this time he acted as an advisor on the activities of the conservatives to bind minorities and fringe groups more closely to the party.

On July 10, 2010, on the recommendation of Conservative leader David Cameron , Popat was ennobled as a Life Peer for his services to small and medium-sized businesses and society at large. The territorial dedication of his title Baron Popat , of Harrow in the London Borough of Harrow , refers to the fact that his parents lived in Harrow after coming to Britain. On March 31, 2011, he made his maiden speech in the House of Lords during a debate on economic growth.

Private

Popat is Hindu and follows the teachings of Morari Bapu , speaking four languages ​​including Gujarati , Hindi , and Swahili . He married Sandhya Lukka on July 19, 1980 and the couple have three sons: Rupeen, Paavan and Shivaan.
