Dolmen La Vacherie

The Dolmen La Vacherie (also called Pierre couverte de la Vacherie) is located in a forest in Distré south of Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The angevin-type dolmen (also called portal dolmen) has a 4.0 × 3.0 m long rectangular chamber with an approximately 2.0 m long portal at the eastern end. The chamber is covered by a single capstone that rests on the two side panels on each side, one of which has collapsed on the northern one. The ceiling plate of the portal is missing. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1976.

Remarks

  1. The dolmen angevin is an allée couverte of the Loire type with a (retracted) trilith portal as an entrance, like the dolmen de la Pierre Folle in Bournand.
