Antoine-César de Choiseul-Praslin , duc de Praslin (born April 6, 1756 in Paris , † January 28, 1808 ibid), was a Maréchal de camp and politician in the government of the French consulate .

Life

He was the son of Renaud César de Choiseul-Praslin (1735-1791) and Suzanne Marguerite Philippine de Durfort de Lorges (1737-1806). His mother was the daughter of Guy Louis de Durfort, duc de Lorges and Randan, and Marie Marguerite Butault de Marsan. His father was ambassador to Naples and his grandfather was a minister under Louis XV.

He had two siblings:

  • César-Hippolyte de Choiseul-Praslin, comte de Sainte-Suzanne (1757–1793) ∞ Joséphine de Choiseul d'Esquilly
  • Julie-Alix de Choiseul-Praslin (1777–1799) ∞ Comte Armand-Louis-Amédée de Hautefort

Marriage and offspring

He married Charlotte Antoinette O'Brien Thomond (daughter of Charles O'Brien de Thomond) and had three children, two daughters and a son, Charles-Félix de Choiseul-Praslin (1778–1841), father of Charles Théobald de Choiseul-Praslin (1805-1847).

Career

On April 6, 1772 he joined the “3 e régiment d'artillerie” in Besançon as a sous-lieutenant à la suite . On April 18, 1774 he was promoted to Capitaine of the cavalry and on December 10, 1776 transferred to the Régiment Royal-Cravates cavalerie . He then switched to the infantry and was on June 3, 1779 Colonel en second of the Régiment de La Reine . Finally, on June 21, he was promoted to Colonel des Régiment de Lorraine .

In 1789 he was elected deputy deputy for the Sénéchaussée des Comté du Maine in the Estates General . After the resignation of Jean-Louis de Montesson on August 20, 1789, he took over his position as a full member of the assembly. He took little part in the deliberations, but approved of Général Bouillé's approach to the Nancy affair . After King Louis XVI. Having moved with his family from Versailles to Paris, Choiseul-Praslin took the oath of allegiance to the National Assembly .

At his request, he was always referred to as “M. Praslin le jeune ”(M. Praslin the Younger).

Promoted to Maréchal de camp on November 28, 1791 , he did not emigrate and in 1793 was suspected of anti-revolutionary activities and arrested. The time up to the fall of Robespierre on “9 thermidor an II” (July 27, 1794) he had to spend in prison. It may only have escaped the guillotine through Robespierre's disempowerment.

He then stayed away from political business until the coup d'état of 18th Brumaire VIII , but was then appointed to the government of the consulate .

Bonaparte appointed him "Sénat conservateur" and awarded him on October 2, 1803 the cross of the Légion d'honneur . On June 14, 1804 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order.

Antoine-César de Choiseul-Praslin, duc de Praslin, comte de Chevigny, vicomte de Melun, baron de La Flèche and Sainte-Suzanne, Pair de France , died in Paris on January 28, 1808. His final resting place is in the Panthéon (Paris) .
