Dolmen de la Gaillarde

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dolmen de la Gaillarde (also called Dolmen de la Gaillarde-sur-Mer ) is a dolmen in Roquebrune-sur-Argens near Frejus in the Var department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The Dolmen de la Gaillarde is the only one left of a group of three dolmens, two of which were destroyed in the 1960s and whose plans are still preserved. The dolmens were built from slate and gneiss slabs of local origin.

The heavily damaged so-called "Dolmen No. 1" was restored in 1995 by Hélène Barge. Its chamber is 2.5 meters long and 2.0 meters wide. One plate south of the head end and one plate on the south side have been removed. The ceiling panel has collapsed towards the interior, but exists, which is an exception for Provencal dolmens. The chamber is enlarged by a damaged 1.5 x 1.0 m passage that opens to the west.

It is possible that the two destroyed graves - referred to as dolmen by Paul Raymond (1859–1944), who examined them in 1908 and 1910 - were block graves (tombes en blocs - chambers in Cairns ). The chamber of No. 2 was 1.8 m long and 1.1 m wide and was delimited by five orthostats . The chamber of No. 3 was bounded half by a round wall and half by a large rectangular plate.

The results of the graves that were excavated by Paul Raymond in 1908 and by V. Cotte in 1924 are not published. The dolmen was listed as a historical monument in 1910.
