Dolmen de la Grotte aux Fées
The Dolmen de la Grotte aux Fées (also called the Dolmen of Mettray ) is located north of Mettray near Tours in the Touraine in the Indre-et-Loire department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
The Grotte-aux-Fées is a typical rectangular above-ground Angevin dolmen of the Loire type , as it was built in large numbers in the Maine-et-Loire department ( Dolmen of Bagneux near Saumur ).
The megalithic complex consists of limestone slabs . It was based on the found pottery to 3500 to 3000 BC. Dated. The dolmen has a chamber about 10.0 m long and 4.0 m wide with three supporting stones on each side and three large cap stones. The middle stone is almost 2.0 meters thick. At the end there is a large end stone, while the prefabricated access part typical of the dolmens of this type is missing apart from two remaining stones. An internal stone placed on the side divides the chamber into two areas, as is often the case with chambers of this type.
The dolmen has been classified as a monument historique since 1992 .
