Dolmen des Courades
The Dolmen des Courades (also called Pierre Levée ) is located near a spring southwest of Saint-Même-les-Carrières near Cognac in the Charente department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ). The Dolmen des Courades was classified as a Monument historique in 1926 .
The limestone ceiling tiles had already broken in 1928 and fallen from the supports. The dolmen is said to have consisted of slabs measuring 3.5 × 3.0 m, which rest on seven bearing stones. The chamber was covered by a 0.9 m thick block of 4.0 x 2.7 m weighing 18 tons. Its area is excavated to a depth of 20 to 30 cm. The tumulus that covered it has disappeared.
