Domenico Merlini
Domenico Merlini (Polish: Dominik Merlini ) (born February 22, 1730 in Castello (Valsolda) on Lake Lugano ; † February 20, 1797 in Warsaw ) was an Italian-Polish architect of classicism .
Life
From 1750 until his death he lived in Poland , where he was admitted to the nobility in 1768 and appointed court architect in 1773. He gained importance with the creation of the Łazienki Park in Warsaw . He built numerous public and private buildings in Warsaw and other Polish cities, often collaborating with Johann Christian Kamsetzer . His works have their own character that shaped the cityscape of Warsaw in the era of Stanisław August Poniatowski . Its architecture is partly influenced by Andrea Palladio and is characterized by the transition from late baroque to classicism. That is why he kept some baroque elements in his works, such as expressive shapes and colors and the abundant use of gold.
