The Domholzschänke is a restaurant east of Kleinliebenau in the northwestern Leipzig floodplain forest .

location

The Domholzschänke is located in the alluvial forest, about ten kilometers west-north-west of Leipzig and 2.8 kilometers south-south-east of Schkeuditz , to whose corridor it belongs after the incorporation of Dölzig . The distance to the Neue Luppe is 200 meters. The restaurant can be reached on a road branching off the connecting road Schkeuditz – Dölzig ( B 186 ), but also on cycling and hiking trails through the floodplain forest.

history

Until the 19th century, a hut was used for forest and hunting purposes on the site of today's restaurant. It is said to have been frequently visited by King Albert of Saxony on hunting trips. From 1912 to 1918 the Leipzig scouts owned the property.

In 1928, next to the hunting lodge, an excursion restaurant called "Domholzschänke" was opened. The name goes back to the domicile ownership of this part of the floodplain forest, which was therefore called "Dömerey-Holz" and later "Domholz". The restaurant soon enjoyed growing popularity and became a household name for a day trip destination in the region when there was still little car. Because of its remoteness, it was also a preferred location for illegal political meetings during the Nazi era .

During the GDR days, the school hiking days often led to “Bockwurst with potato salad or noodle soup”.

The landlady of the Domholzschänke was able to successfully resist the nationalization attempts of the GDR authorities. When long-distance travel became possible after the end of the GDR and the Domholzschänke lost its importance, it had to cease operations. Due to non-use, the property fell into disrepair in the 1990s. In 2002 the television film “ Marga Engel kocht vor Wut ” with Marianne Sägebrecht in the lead role was shot here before the location burned down to the ground in January 2003 due to arson.

In 2006 the Domholzschänke was rebuilt and is gaining popularity due to the increasing importance of local recreation.

The Domholzschänke closed on April 1, 2019, as, according to the operator, the lack of staff and another large construction site made continued operation impossible. After being closed for eight months and a change of operator, the Domholzschänke has been open again since December 2019. In addition to the restaurant, there is also a snack bar with a beer garden on the area.
