Dominique Schnapper (born Dominique-Françoise Aron ; born November 9, 1934 in Paris ) is a French sociologist .

Life

Her parents were the well-known French sociologist Raymond Aron and Suzanne Gauchon (1907-1997).

Schnapper completed her studies in history and political science in 1957 at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris . In 1967 she received her doctorate in sociology from the Sorbonne . From the 1980s she was director at the Paris elite university École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), where she set up the Institute for Jewish Studies.

Dominique Schnapper is primarily concerned with historical sociology, as well as with studies on minorities, unemployment, work and urban sociology, and since the 1990s also with the concept of nation and citizenship.

Between 1987 and 1996 she was a member of various government advisory commissions, and between 1995 and 1999 she was president of the Société Française de Sociologie. Schnapper was also a member of the French Constitutional Council, the Conseil constitutionnel, from 2001 to 2010 .

Dominique Aron married the French art historian Antoine Schnapper (1933-2004) in 1958, with whom she has three children.
