Donald Joseph "Don" Oakes (born October 8, 1928 in Rhyl , † June 13, 1977 in Islington ) was an English football player . The left wing runner played for Arsenal in the 1950s . He was part of the team that won the English championship in 1953 , but rarely got beyond the status of a supplementary player.

Athletic career

Oakes joined the English first division club Arsenal FC as an amateur in December 1945 . Seven months later, he signed a professional contract with the Gunners and then did his military service between 1946 and 1948. As a left winger, who could also be used as a half- forward, he spent almost ten years at Arsenal, but was mostly on the reserve team. He brought it in the Football Combination , which was used as a league for replacement teams at the time, to 158 games.

In the first team he made his debut on the first day of the championship season 1952/53 against Aston Villa (2-1). After only one more appearance on the way to the championship, he played nine games in the 1954/55 season. However, his sporting perspective remained limited and so the eleven mandatory league games (and the one goal) should not have any further probation opportunities. In 1956 he ended his professional career as a result of a rheumatic disease .

Oakes, whose father Alfred was also a professional footballer, died just six and a half years after this in June 1974 at the age of only 48.
