Donald Buchanan

Donald Barrington Buchanan (also called Danny Buchanan or Danny Buck ; born September 28, 1942 in St. Elizabeth , † January 10, 2011 in Kingston ) was a Jamaican politician ( PNP ).

Life and politics

After various primary schools, Buchanan attended Excelsior High School and then went to Waulgrove College. He later studied at the Trade Union Institute of the University of the West Indies and the Front Royal Trade Union Institute in Virginia , USA .

In 1975 and 1976, Buchanan became deputy mayor of Black River . He stood in 1980 for the first time in the election to the House of Representatives in the constituency of South West St. Elizabeth for the PNP, but lost to the candidate of the Jamaica Labor Party . After the PNP boycotted the 1983 election, Buchanan did not run again until 1989. He managed to win South West St. Elizabeth and he entered parliament. In the 1993, 1997 and 2002 elections, Buchanan was able to defend his parliamentary seat and only resigned from parliament in 2007 when he did not run again after representing the constituency of SW St. Elizabeth in the House of Representatives for 18 years.

He held various offices during his time as an MP in which the PNP was the uninterrupted government. Buchanan was first Minister of State in various ministries, then became Minister of Labor and Social Security in February 2000 , Minister of Water and Housing in 2002 and was most recently Minister of Information and Development in the government of Portia Simpson Miller .

Buchanan was also at times General Secretary of the PNP and a long-time member of the party's National Executive Council. He also represented the PNP on the Electoral Advisory Committee, which was later replaced by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica, of which Buchanan was a member until November 2010.

Buchanan was married and had seven children. In his last interview in November 2010, Buchanan spoke publicly about his cancer for the first time. He died on January 10, 2011 in the University Hospital of the University of the West Indies of complications from his illness.
