Donald J. Kiesler

Donald Joseph Kiesler (born December 22, 1933 in Louisville, Kentucky , † May 16, 2007 ) was an American psychologist and psychotherapy researcher . His research focus was on the theory, diagnosis and psychotherapy of interpersonal problems.

Life

Kiesler received his PhD in clinical psychology in 1963. He then worked at the Psychiatric Institute of the University of Wisconsin in the psychotherapy research group under Carl Rogers .

1964 to 1967 he was an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Iowa .

From 1967 to 1971 Kiesler was an associate professor and from 1972 to 1973 professor in the Department of Psychology at Emory University in Atlanta.

From 1973 until his retirement in 1999 he was professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond .

He became better known in the field of psychotherapy research through his article "Some myths of psychotherapy research and the search for a paradigm", as well as through his taxonomy of interpersonal problems (also known as the "Kiesler Circle"). The Kiesler Circle plays a major role in the psychotherapy of chronic depression with the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy .
