Don Roper

Donald George Beaumont "Don" Roper (* 14. December 1922 in Botley , county Hampshire , † 8. June 2001 in Southampton ) was an English football player .

life and career

Roper began his career with Southampton FC in the Football League War Cup during World War II . After the war, the left midfielder was signed by Arsenal in 1947 . The Gunners paid £ 10,000 for roper. With the team from London he won the English championship in 1948 and 1953 and the English Cup in 1950. Roper was the very first game on British soil , which with floodlights was played, Hibernian against Arsenal, there. After a year in the reserve team of the Gunners, he moved back to Southampton FC in 1957 and became club captain there. From 1961 to 1963 he let his career end with clubs Weymouth and Dorchester Town. In addition to his playing career as a footballer, he worked as a cricketer at Hampshire CCC. After his active football career, he settled in Southampton and worked as an engineer . Don Roper died in 2001 at the age of 78.
