Donata Helmrich
Donata Helmrich (* 1900 as Donata Hardt; † 1986 ) is one of the people named in the list of the Righteous Among the Nations from Germany . During the National Socialist era , she and her husband Eberhard Helmrich saved the lives of numerous persecuted Jews.
Life
Donata Helmrich married Eberhard Helmrich , a Berlin agricultural expert, in 1933 and was the mother of four children, including the future politician Cornelia Schmalz-Jacobsen . She helped Jewish friends and acquaintances by obtaining these hidden or forged papers, she also disguised Jewish Ukrainians as housemaids in Berlin and placed them in the neighborhood. In the post-war period, Donata Helmrich worked as an interpreter for the CDU politicians Konrad Adenauer and Gerhard Schröder . After retirement, she lived on Sylt , where she was buried in the Keitum cemetery after her death .
Honors
For the rescue of Jews under National Socialism , she was honored by the State of Israel as Righteous Among the Nations by planting a tree for her in 1986 in the Garden of the Righteous Among the Nations at the Yad Vashem Memorial . Eberhard Helmrich was given the same honor as early as 1965.
