Dondo is a district of the Sofala Province in Mozambique with the capital Dondo . Its territory is bordered to the north by the Muanza district , to the east by the Indian Ocean , to the south by the city of Beira and the Buzi district and to the west by the Nhamatanda district .

The Dondo district is located in the transition area from the tropical rainforest to the hot steppe (according to the climate classification of Köppen and Geiger). The average annual rainfall is 1,000 to 1,499 mm.

The district is 2,308 square kilometers and in 2013 had a population of 161,752 people. This corresponds to a population density of 70 people per square kilometer. As in most districts in Mozambique, the population is very young, in Dondo 41 percent of the population are under 15 years old.

In relation to the entire province of Sofala, the Dondo district has a low rate of illiteracy, which is particularly evident among the youth. In Dondo, for example, only 10 percent of 15 to 19-year-olds cannot read and write, compared to 23 percent in Sofala province. But in Dondo too, analphebitism is high, especially among women. Among the 25 to 29 year olds, 11 percent of men but 42 percent of women are illiterate.

Facilities and services

There are (as of 2013) 75 primary schools ( Primárias) and eleven secondary schools (Secundárias) in the district. Of the primary schools, 51 are public schools (68%), and of the secondary schools, three of the seven are public (43%).

There are eleven health centers and two outpatient departments in Dondo.

Economy and Infrastructure

In 2007, 12.5 percent of the population had access to electrical energy. 30 percent got the drinking water from a well and only 4 percent from a river or pond (compared to 15 percent in Sofala province).

Agriculture

In 2010 there were 33,000 farms averaging 1.4 hectares of land. The main crops were corn, cassava, beans, peanuts, sweet potatoes and rice (as of 2005).

Natural resources

The only natural resource that is mined in Dondo is clay.

Dondo is an important transport hub:

  • Rail: There are connections to the provinces of Beira, Manica and Tete and to Zimbabwe , Malawi , Zambia , Botswana and the Republic of the Congo .
  • The road network has a length of 156 kilometers. The national road EN 6 runs through Dondo in the west and connects Beira in the south with Chimoio , the capital of the province of Manica .
Cyclone Idai meets Dondo

Natural disaster 2019

On March 13, 2019, cyclone Idai hit the Dondo district within 24 hours with wind speeds of 160 to 190 km / h and 150 mm of precipitation. In addition to other aid organizations, Caritas Austria also supplied Beira, Dondo and Caia with food and hygiene items.
