Donji Grad ( [ˈdǒ.ɲi grâːd] , German lower town , lower castle ) is a district in the central part of Zagreb , the capital of Croatia . It emerged mainly from the mid-19th century when the city expanded south. The area is characterized by a large number of high-quality buildings of historicism (around 1860 to 1900) and Art Nouveau and also has some remarkable projects of architectural modernism . The city's main shopping streets are located here.

According to the 2001 census, the district had 45,108 inhabitants. Donji Grad's official name is rarely used; the colloquial name is centar ("center"). The district borders on Gornji Grad-Medveščak in the north, Maksimir and Peščenica-Žitnjak in the east, Trnje in the south, Trešnjevka-sjever in the south-west and Črnomerec in the north-west.

District

Until 1994 today's Donji Grad was divided into 14 local communities , namely "Andrija Medulić", "August Šenoa", Preradović Square, "Hrvatski narodni vladari", Knez Mislav Street, King Petar Svačić Square, King Zvonimir Street, Matko Laginja, Mimara, Antun Bauer Street, Pavao Šubić Avenue, King Petar Krešimir Square and Zrinski Square. Donji Grad is not usually divided into smaller neighborhoods these days. Small parts of the municipalities "Antun Mihanović", "August Cesarec", "Ban Keglević", Eugen Kvaternik Square, Peščenica, Petrova Street and Ribnjak were also in the district.
