The Donnerburgbrücke is a historic vaulted bridge near Klein Denkte in the Wolfenbüttel district that spans the Altenau , a tributary of the Oker . The first mentions of a bridge at this location go back to 1385. The bridge that exists today was built in 1708 and closed in 1961. It is one of the oldest vault bridges in Lower Saxony .

history

The bridge connects the eastern part of the former residence town of Wolfenbüttel with the stone deposits on the Ösel and with the Oker crossing in Ohrum . Another crossing over the Altenau is on the Wolfenbüttel-Halberstadt long-distance trade route, today's federal road 79 , in Wendessen .

There is a report from the year 1385, according to which a peace agreement between the city of Braunschweig and Cord von der Asseburg took place at the bridge. However, it is not known whether it was already a stone bridge.

The construction of the previous bridge is documented for 1621/1622, which was destroyed on April 3, 1702 in the course of the occupation of the Duchy of Braunschweig by Hanover and Celle . Although a new bridge was to be built on the ducal orders, the road ran through the water for several years. During this time a Hans Jürgen Donner set up an inn which he called Donnerburg. It was not until 1708, six years after the destruction, that the bridge that exists today was built and given a Latin plaque on the north side. In the opinion of the local home curator, however, this contains historical inaccuracies. Also on the south side is a plaque with the year 1590 and various stonemason's marks. The origin of this table is not clear.

The road between Wolfenbüttel and Klein Denkte was relocated in 1961 and led over a new concrete bridge. A notice board for a rest area invites cyclists and car travelers to look at the bridge.
