rock limestone

The Ösel is a 156 meter high elevation southeast of Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony .

geography

The hill, which has been designated as a landscape protection area since 1966 , is covered by extensive lawns for almost two kilometers in length and one kilometer in width. This rough lawn represents a historical landscape, as it was once characteristic of large parts of the east Brunswick hill country . Little trees cover only the eastern slope, while bushes and shrubbery line the edges of the former limestone quarries. The Ösel lies in the area of the municipality of Denkte . There are two mountain ranges in the area . The Asse is about three kilometers to the northeast, the Oderwald about four kilometers to the west.

The Ösel is listed as a separate sub- natural area of the East Brunswick hill country with the code number 512.04.

Geology and history

The Ösel was created through halokinesis . The rock layers, some of which are rich in fossils , do not lie horizontally on top of one another, they are steeply inclined and sloping towards the east. This is evident in the numerous abandoned quarries that have gnawed the area. Above all, Rogenstein , wave limestone and trochitic limestone from the Triassic period were mined here. In 1425 Duke Bernhard allowed "the citizens of Braunschweig to break stones and burn lime on the Ösel". The transport was carried out on Altenau and Oker with boats. A significant part of the stones needed to build the Wolfenbüttel fortress at the end of the 16th century come from the Ösel. In 1575 Duke Julius compiled an “instrument book” for the quarries of Elm ( Elmkalkstein ), Asse and Ösel with the devices necessary for every “ stone pit”. Since the 1980s, the BUND has taken care of the conservation area.

Flora and fauna

Sheep farming up into the 1950s and since the 1990s has preserved a species-rich, poor grassland . The yellow asparagus pea ( Tetragonolobus maritimus ) has one of two locations in Lower Saxony. The Danish tragacanth ( Astragalus danicus ), the branchy grass lily ( Anthericum ramosum ) and the Carthusian carnation ( Dianthus carthusianorum ) also occur here. Typical are milkweed plants on which milkweed swarms can be found in the caterpillar stage from the beginning of July . The fauna includes gray bunting , sand lizards and swallowtails .

Others

The Ösel is a popular meeting place for operators of model gliders and radio amateurs .
