The Vozdvizhensky couple had no children for a long time - seven years. When they finally have a child, the father learns that it is not his child. Vozdvishensky decides to leave his family, but sympathy for his helpless wife and child holds him back. Fatherly love grows in him every day, and eventually he becomes so attached to the child that he cannot live without it. However, he is unable to forgive his wife for adultery and only stays with her for the sake of the boy whom he loves as his birth son. And yet the marriage falls apart after five years: Vozdvishensky's wife leaves him for the father of the child and promises Vosdvishensky that the boy can keep his family name and that the truth about his birth will only be learned when one of the men dies ...
