Großstöbnitz village church
The Evangelical-Lutheran village church Großstöbnitz is in the district Großstöbnitz of the city of Schmölln in the district of Altenburger Land in Thuringia .
History and architecture
The church , which dates back to a Romanesque complex, was known for years for its leaning tower , which was built as a choir tower on the Romanesque choir rectangle from around 1200. The choir was redesigned in the late Gothic style and given a five-eighth closure . The wide nave , which was lengthened in 1706 and last restored in 1949, also dates from this period . Like the choir rectangle, the nave is closed off by a coffered ceiling from 1661. A ribbed vault is drawn in at the end of the choir. The church clock has no numbers, but shows the motto TIME IS GRACE in letters . Arched windows from the first half of the 16th century can be seen on the upper floor of the tower . During a restoration in 1985/1986, the tower end was rebuilt. In 1886 the church was regotified. The furnishings date from the second half of the 17th century. The organ is a work by Hermann Kopp from 1886 with eight stops on two manuals and a pedal .
