Where's Charley? is a British musical film of David Butler from the year 1952 . The film is based on the musical of the same name by George Abbott from 1942, which in turn is an adaptation of the play Charley's Aunt (original title: Charley's Aunt ) by Brandon Thomas from 1892.

action

The two students Charley and Jack want to meet Amy and Kitty. But the two only agree if a chaperone is there. So Charley decides to play his own aunt from Brazil, because she cancels at short notice.

background

The film was completed and distributed by the production company Warner Bros. The musical film was recorded in mono , with an aspect ratio of 1.37: 1 on 35 mm film . Oxford was chosen as the filming location and further recordings were made in the Warner Bros. film studio in Teddington , England .

The film premiered in New York City on June 26, 1952 . In Austria , the film was released under the title Charley's Tante in May 1953.

At this point in time, Charley's aunt had already been made into films several times. The first film was an Italian silent - short film from the year 1911. The first German-language film reaction was quenched with Heinz Rühmann in the lead role under the title of Charley's Aunt produced in Germany. Rühmann received bad reviews for this presentation. In 1963 an Austrian production appeared under the same name with Peter Alexander as Aunt Charley and received bad reviews for it.

reception

Bosley Crowther of the New York Times rated the portrayal of Ray Bolger as successful, who skillfully implemented the role. The costumes used, the sets and recordings looked authentic, but this is missing from the film itself.
