Colonel Shirley (original title The Little Colonel ) is an American comedy film directed by David Butler from 1935 . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Annie Fellows Johnston .

In 1870, Colonel Lloyd denied his daughter Elizabeth because she met Jack Sherman, they fell in love and got married. Years later, Elizabeth becomes pregnant and gives birth to Lloyd Sherman, Little Colonel . The family later moves into a country house, which is in the immediate vicinity of Colonel Lloyd's property. Later on, Lloyd and Colonel Lloyd become friends without knowing that they are related. They only find out about their relatives at a later meeting.

The dance duo Temple-Robinson also worked together in other film productions such as The Little Rebel (1935), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938) and Just Around the Corner (1938). Shirley Temple was trained for the dance routine by Bill Robinson himself.

The recordings were recorded in black and white and mono at an aspect ratio of 1.37: 1 . The film material amounts to a total length of 2,238.26 m, which means eight rolls of film. A later version of the film was digitally processed and can now also be viewed in color .

The dance film was shown in US cinemas on February 22, 1935. The film was shown in European cinemas from September 1st. At the completion of The Little Colonel was Fox Film Corporation involved. The film was also released in Austria under the title Colonel Shirley .

Andre Sennwald of the New York Times thought at least Shirley Temple was delightful and great in her role. In addition, Colonel Shirley had an attraction through Temple, whereby the entrance with her dance performances, which she showed with Billy Robinson, was worth the entrance.
