The singer Melinda, who is quite successful in Europe, wants to visit her mother Jessica, once a successful star on Broadway , in New York after a long time . But to her amazement, Melinda realizes that Jessica only appears in bars and is addicted to alcohol.

The film was completed and distributed by the production company Warner Bros. The comedy film was recorded in mono with an aspect ratio of 1.37: 1 on 35mm film . For the film, Doris Day released an album under the same title, which landed at number one on the Billboard 200 .
The film premiered in New York City on March 26, 1951 . In the Federal Republic of Germany it was first shown on television on October 19, 1982.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the "Hollywood dream factory production with some outstanding musical numbers ... was thoroughly entertaining". The New York Times judged the musical adaptation negatively, as the "story flattens out at times" when "funny moments are sought".
