You'll Find Out is a 1940 American crime comedy directed by David Butler .

In this story about a young girl (Helen Parrish) who is said to have been cheated of her inheritance, the actors Peter Lorre , Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, who are mainly known from horror films , play the leading roles alongside Kay Kyser .

action

Kay Kyser and his band are hired by Janis Bellacrest to play at their 21st birthday party. Since the death of Janis' father, her aunt Margo has been managing Bellacrest Manor, a gloomy country estate where the festival is to take place. Aunt Margo, a very eccentric lady, is Janis' guardian until she comes of age. When a thunderstorm is brewing during the party, Margo confides to Kay that she lived with the dead man in a kind of shared apartment and then introduces him to the ominous judge Mainwaring. When the threatening-looking Prince Saliano drops ominous hints, Kay actually wants to leave the property with his band as soon as possible. This is made impossible for them, however, as a lightning strike destroyed a bridge that was the only connection to the mainland. Janis introduces Kay to Professor Carl Fenniger, who she has asked to expose Saliano, as she suspects that he was gunning for her aunt. Fenniger is an expert in the field of supernatural phenomena. As Kay finds out, however, Fenniger, Saliano and Mainwaring have forged a conspiracy to get the assets that Janis is entitled to when she comes of age, previously managed by Margo, who gave them all the freedom. During a séance, the chandelier hanging just above Janis' chair suddenly detaches from the ceiling and barely misses its target. Kay is now clear that Janis is being pursued after life. Shortly afterwards, he catches Saliano imitating the voice of Janis' deceased father with a sound device and is subsequently confronted with a weapon aimed at him by Judge Mainwaring. However, he succeeds in wrestling Mainwaring to the ground, and with the help of a dog he gets rid of a lighted stick of dynamite. The three would-be killers are now exposed and Janis can take over her inheritance.

Production and Background

The film was shot from August 8 to October 9, 1940. You'll Find Out was released in US cinemas on November 22, 1940 .

The film had the working title The Old Professor . The team of producer and director David Butler, his deputy Fred Fleck, the editor Irene Morra and the writers James core and David Butler (not to be confused with the director) was working in 1939 at the RKO film That's Right, You're Wrong together .

Kay Kyser was at the height of his popularity as a big band leader when this film was made and one of the most popular entertainers in America with a large fan base. So it was only a matter of time before he made his way to Hollywood. After That's Right, You're Wrong , this was his second film, whereby the cast is also remarkable with the actors Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and Peter Lorre, who almost always appear threatening in their roles. This film was inspired by James Whale's archetypal haunted house story from 1932 The House of Horror , but most of the scenes in this film adaptation were played with a wink. The film's success generated a number of follow-up films like Bob Hope's The Ghost Breakers (1940) and Rigid with fear ( Scared Stiff ) 1953 with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin .

In 1943 the trio Karloff, Lugosi, Lorre got together again to discuss a new film project Chamber of Horrors , which was never realized. In addition to a sequence with the Frankenstein monster and Dracula, it should also feature the Wolf Man, The Invisible Man and The Mad Ghoul.

criticism

The New York Times’s Bosley Crowther reviewed the film as one of those "stupid shudder comedies" where the scriptwriters were startled by their own ideas, which the dialogue and plot development clearly showed. With three well-known villains in a film and Mr. Kyser as a counterpart, you would actually think that the plot is a bit more original than screams in the night. While some of the incidents are amusing, the overall picture is routine and boredom.

Awards

In 1941 , Jimmy McHugh and Johnny Mercer with I'd Know You Anywhere from You'll Find Out were nominated for an Oscar in the "Best Song" category. However, Leigh Harline and Ned Washington were awarded with When You Wish upon a Star from the cartoon Pinocchio .
