Allyn Ann McLerie

Allyn Ann McLerie (born December 1, 1926 in Grand-Mère , Québec ; † May 21, 2018 in North Bend , Washington ) was an American actress , singer and dancer of Canadian origin. She gained fame through the role of Katie Brown in the western Heavy Colts in Tender Hands .

Life

Allyn Ann McLerie was born in Grand-Mère, Québec, Canada in 1926. Her mother Vera Alma MacTaggart was a dancer and her father Allan Gordon McLerie was a pilot. A year after their daughter was born, the family moved to New York , where Allyn took dance classes in Brooklyn . She made her stage debut as a teenager in Kurt Weill's One Touch of Venus on Broadway . This was followed by roles in On the Town and in 1948 in Where's Charley? .

As a member of The Actors Studio , McLerie appeared in other Broadway performances in the following years, such as in West Side Story . In 1950 and 1951 she was seen as a dancer and actress at the American Ballet Theater , with whom she performed in Europe and South America, among others.

McLerie played her first small film role in 1948 in the music film Words and Music . In her first film appearances, she was named as Allyn McLerie without her middle name in the credits. McLerie's first leading role was Amy Spettigue in Where's Charley? . The following year she was in a big role in the western Heavy Colts in Tender Hands as a friend of Doris Day's main character. From 1969 roles in a number of well-known films followed, including The Crook , the Western Monte Walsh , The Cowboys and The Death Ride of the Magnificent 7 . She was also seen in three films by Sydney Pollack : 1969 in Only Horses Are Shed , 1972 as Crazy Woman in Jeremiah Johnson and 1973 in The Way We Were .

In addition to her film and stage career, McLerie has appeared in a variety of television series. This includes, among other things, guest appearances in three episodes of the crime series FBI from 1971 to 1974. She was also seen in 1983 as Mrs. Smith in all four episodes of the television series The Thorn Birds . She played her last role in 1993 in two episodes of the television series Brooklyn Bridge .

Allyn Ann McLerie was married twice: from 1945 to the divorce in 1953 to the songwriter Adolph Green , then from 1953 to his death in 2016 to the actor George Gaynes , with whom she has two children. McLerie died on May 21, 2018 at the age of 91.
