In the Münkeboe Village Museum (own name: Dgenössmuseum Münkeboe), village life in East Frisia in earlier years is modeled. In keeping with its location in Münkeboe, East Frisia , the focus of the exhibition is on mill technology, school and craft, agriculture and the colonization of the moor.

History of the museum

The remains of the windmill that is now part of the museum were to be demolished in 1980. Interested citizens were able to convince the owner to leave the mill to an association for the purpose of reconstruction. When a corresponding association was founded, a further goal was set that workshops, agricultural equipment and other facilities in the area should be protected from decay and that they should come to the exhibition. After completion of the mill restoration in 1987, construction of the other facilities began in 1988. In 1992 these measures were also completed.

Structural systems

All systems are meant to be “touchable”. This should enable a vivid experience of earlier times.

Windmill

Münkeboe windmill - Gallery Dutch type

The Münkeboe mill is a two-story Dutch gallery with a compass rose. The mill was built from 1852 to 1854. Milling continued for about 100 years when a storm destroyed the wings. As a result, the dome was also dismantled. In 1980 demolition was threatened, but could be averted. The following complete restoration was completed in 1987. In addition to the mill, a shoemaker's shop, a pottery and a mill construction company are exhibited in the rooms of the mill.

Flutter mill

Replica of a flutter mill

A replica of a flutter mill is on the site. This type of mill is a regionally occurring wind pump , which was used to pump water from lower areas to a higher level. The principle is very simple: An Archimedean screw is driven directly by the vane shaft without any deflection or gear. As a result, the winged cross stands at an angle to the sky. Today these mills are used to irrigate wetlands.

Bakery and grocery store

The grocery store gives an idea of how little space on all the necessary goods of daily necessities could be offered. The attached bakery is still sometimes operated today. All the necessary facilities are available. There is a brick field oven next to this building.

Village school

This replica of a village school with only one class was based on the former village school of Moorhusen. The teacher's desk, the two-seater benches, the blackboard, the maps etc. come from there and also from Münkeboe.

Peat ship

The peat ship was used to harvest peat from the Münkeboe area across the canals to the northern harbor. Building materials and fertilizer were transported on the way back. The ship was "driven" by two men who pulled it. The ship exhibited here is an original. It was sunk and filled in in 1950 when it was no longer needed. The museum association uncovered and restored it.

Frame sawmill

The sawmill of the D Körpermuseum Münkeboe .

In the sawmill, tree trunks are cut into boards, planks and squared timber. For this purpose, the tree trunk on a cart is pulled through a horizontally moving saw blade, which is adjustable in height. The saw blade is driven by a 30 liter diesel engine.

Cartwright

In the wheelwright shop the tools and equipment that were required for the construction of horse-drawn carts, wooden pumps, carriages, wooden wheels, etc. are stored. These tools include workbenches, gauges for the wheels, planers and all kinds of planes, saws and various others.

Village blacksmiths

Blacksmith's shop in the village museum

In the village blacksmith's shop there are not only “hand tools” such as a forge with bellows, hammer, anvil, pliers and hand-operated drill, but also a steam engine with a generator and a diesel engine to replace the wind power that is not always available. The diesel-powered hammer forge is located in the extension.

Colonist House

Bog colonists were people who settled the bog edges in the nineteenth century, drained it, cut peat and, by burning the bog, cultivated it for agriculture. Their dwellings are illustrated here using an already relatively comfortable solid construction made of fired bricks. This is divided into two parts. In the living area there is a kitchen, a piece (sleeping accommodation) and a dining table. The barn includes a threshing floor, storage areas for hay and straw, stables for cattle and an outhouse. Today the barn serves as an exhibition area for weaving utensils, glass blowing tools, washing machines and a goldsmith's shop.

Gulf courtyard complex with coach house

Tractor in the Gulfhof

This reconstruction of a Gulfhof facility was essentially built from historical material, whereby 'Gulf' is a place that is used to store hay and straw. The museum uses the facility as an exhibition space for agricultural equipment. You can see threshing machines, grist mills, old tractors, mowing machines, potato lifting machines, plows, harrows and other hand tools. Further agricultural implements are exhibited under the roof of the Remise. This includes tedders, trailers and other threshing machines.

Dorfkrug with still

In addition to the usual facilities such as a bar, beer pump, chairs, benches and tables, the village mug also contains a copper still and a device for “burning” alcohol, as it is said to have been used frequently after the Second World War.

Syringe house

Equipment in the syringe house

Historical fire fighting equipment is stored in the syringe house. In addition to hand-operated pumps, old motor-driven pumps can also be viewed.
