The village association "Uns Timmel" eV is a village association founded in 2009 in the Großefehner district of Timmel . The purpose of the non-profit association is to promote home care and village coexistence in Timmel and Timmelerfeld, which belongs to Timmel.

De Schippers van Timmel

He achieved national fame back in 2011 with his play De Schippers van Timmel (“Die Schiffer von Timmel”). The historical drama was staged for eight days in the local equestrian hall in front of up to 900 spectators. The hall allows a 65 m wide stage. The setting consisted of replicas of seven historic houses on a scale of 1: 0.7. The village church, which still exists today, was among the buildings. More than 100 amateur actors from all over East Friesland and around 150 other volunteers in the background took part in the screening. There were also various horses, some with replicas of historical carriages. Elke Münch directed.

action

The piece, played in Low German , takes place in 1811. Ostfriesland is ruled by Napoleon. On April 14, his troops marched into the village to recruit young men. The residents live from seafaring. However, since the troops are looking for crews for their gunboats, they want to enforce the existing conscription in Timmel as well. The residents of the village actively and passively resist this. But they have no chance against the superior strength of the armed and battle-tested army. So it comes to a big trial in the place with severe punishments, up to and including executions.

The plot is loosely based on real events.

Steerns over Timmel

Building on the success of De Schippers van Timmel , the village association performed Steerns över Timmel in 2018 . Once again around 100 amateur actors and 150 volunteers were involved in the background with around 70,000 hours of work. On twelve dates, the 65 m long backdrop set up for this purpose in the equestrian hall again played predominantly in Low German. In addition to the historic mill, this time the royal navigation school, which was also in the real village, was recreated on a scale of 1: 0.7. Rehearsals began in late January 2018; the stage construction followed in February 2018. The author is Gerd Brandt; Elke Münch again directed.

action

In the middle of the 19th century there were repeated heavy losses at sea. The Kingdom of Hanover then passed a law in 1845 to review taxpayers. Timmel then applied to be a location for a navigation school ( Low German : Schipperschool). This was founded as one of the first in northern Germany in 1846.

Many seaworthy ships were at home in Timmel. The boatmen not only went to the North Sea, but also to Portugal and even across the Atlantic. At the beginning of the play one of the captains has to complain about a total loss. On the one hand, he has to argue with the village mutual insurance company for compensation for his financial loss. On the other hand, the village has to cope with the loss of a sailor and the injury of many men. Out of necessity, different groups think about a solution and come up with the need for guides. Then a petition is drawn up via the district administrator to the king, who gives his blessing to a navigation school. Since there is initially no house, the school begins its operation in a farmer's parlor . The farmers are not enthusiastic about the school because the young men are now sitting in the school instead of helping on the farm. Nor do they go to sea, where they at least have an income.

While the first - meanwhile in the specially built navigation school - successfully complete their training, the efforts for freedom in the Kingdom of Hanover do not stop at Timmel. The sometimes precarious conditions of the rural population are discussed in the streets and squares. Even the deposition of the king is an issue - until the royal Hanoverian guard comes and ensures peace and quiet. The March Revolution that followed in 1848 is no longer covered by the play.

This piece, too, is loosely based on true events. The navigation school was actually founded in 1846 as the first in northern Germany.
