Doris Gercke (born February 7, 1937 in Greifswald ) is a German writer . She also writes under the pseudonym Marie-Jo Morell.

Life

Doris Gercke comes from a Greifswald working-class family who fled to Hamburg in 1949. After attending school at the Lerchenfeld grammar school in Hamburg from 1951 to 1954, she completed an apprenticeship as an administrative clerk , which she had to drop out of because her parents could no longer afford the school fees required at the time. She married when she was 20 years old. After the birth of her second child, she gave up her job and lived as a wife, housewife and mother. In 1980, after a 15-year break, she graduated from high school and studied law . On the other hand, she never practiced the profession of lawyer. Instead, she decided in 1988 to write her first novel: Weinschröter, you have to hang . According to her own statements, she was originally inspired by novels by Raymond Chandler and the Swedish author couple Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö . The crime story about the investigator Bella Block was a success. This was followed by numerous other crime novels with the same protagonist. The figure of the self-confident, rough-legged and hard-drinking detective became known to a wide audience through the television adaptations with Hannelore Hoger in the title role. However, the scripts are now being written by other writers after she gave up the rights to the television character. She also writes books for children and young people as well as volumes of poetry.

The author feels closely connected to the peace movement and the fight against neo-fascism , but is not a party member. She regularly takes part in events such as the Easter marches , demonstrations and conferences of the left opposition. She is a member of the PEN Center in Germany .
