The mandrel gorse ( Calicotome ) are a plant genus , which to the subfamily of Schmetterlingsblütler part (Faboideae) within the family of the Leguminosae (Fabaceae).
The direct translation of the generic name is "chalice divider", since the calyx is divided when it opens and the upper part remains in the flower as a hat.
The species are native to the Mediterranean. They grow mainly in macchia and similar shrub vegetation.
Systematics
The genus was first described by Link in 1822 in the Enumeratio Plantarum Horti Regii Berolinensis .
There are three types:
- Hairy thorn gorse ( Calicotome villosa (Poir.) Link ): It occurs in the Mediterranean region from Morocco, Spain and Portugal to the Middle East.
- Prickly thorn gorse ( Calicotome spinosa (L.) Link )
- Calicotome infesta (C. Presl) cast.
The genus is also sometimes included in the genus Cytisus .
